11-year-old Anna lived with her parents in the Odesa region in the southwest of Ukraine when the shelling started. When the first missile hit the family’s home, her parents managed to cover Anna with blankets and pillows, which saved her life. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be the last strike – a subsequent rocket hit the home directly, with the resulting explosion ripping open the front door. Anna was able to crawl out from the destruction, though her parents did not have time to escape and died just a few meters away from their child.
Anna is now under the care of her older brother, orphaned by the indiscriminate shelling on her home.
